Research conducted from 45 previously published studies has shown that welders and people exposed to welding fumes are up to 43% more likely to develop lung cancer than those in the general population. The fumes had previously been classified as ‘possibly carcinogenic’, but upon further study it was discovered that welding or being exposed to fumes from welding is associated with a 17% higher risk of developing cancer than from smoking or asbestos exposure.

Welding fumes are created when the metals used in the process are heated to temperatures high above their melting point. They can then vaporise and condense into very tiny solid particles that can linger within the air. The type of vapours given off depend on the nature of the metals being used; for example, nickel and chromium compounds are both known to cause lung cancer, whereas cadmium can cause a range of health issues, both in the long and the short-term.

That is not to say that welding cannot be performed safely; suitable health and safety procedures alongside robust ventilation and appropriate personal protective equipment can all help to reduce the risks faced by welders, so long as employers take the dangers seriously.

When chemical fumes enter the lungs they can cause a range of illness and injuries; some are noticeable straight away, but others are not detected for a long time – in many cases by the time the problem is diagnosed it can be too late to treat it effectively.

If you or someone you care for has been affected as a result of exposure to dangerous chemical fumes, dusts or other substances within their work-place or due to their job, you could well be entitled to make a claim for compensation.

All employers have a responsibility to ensure the health and safety of their workers is protected, and if they have failed to protect you from chemical fumes or other dangerous substances within the workplace, then they can be liable for prosecution.
